Beverly Mascoll is a previous Order of Canada winner, but it was decades before she won this award when Mr Goudas first met her. At the time, she was asking local store owners to donate goods that had been rendered unsaleable due to ripped labels or other cosmetic faults so that she could use them in helping the poor. Mr Goudas was inspired by her dedication and continued to support her initiatives for decades until her death in 2001.
Mr Goudas’ love for immigrant communities can be seen in his many donations to Afro-Canadian Caribbean organisations as well as Greek, Sri Lankan and Filipino charitable initiatives that strive to provide food, education and counselling to those in need.
There is no balance sheet totalling the value of these contributions over the years, but if one had been kept, the cumulative value would be enormous.
